Aphorism on Settling

If we cannot have glory we settle for the appearance of glory.
If we cannot have power we settle for a position of power.
If we cannot have love we settle for tokens of love.
If we could have but one experience of true glory,
legitimate power
or genuine love,
we would be settled,
even with nothing else.
